6 Weeks in Internal Medicine + Pulmonology

I'm gonna tell you my story of internship in internal medicine and pulmonology.

So, there are 2 floors in this building. The lower floor is for internal medicine and the upper is for isolation or pulmonology. I got 3 weeks in each division.

First three weeks, in lower floor, internal medicine. It made me quite nervous actually. It was begun in a beautiful morning. I went to hospital using this scrub, light blue, and said hi to a nurse. She confusedly staring at me and answer my greeting. Then I introduce myself as the new rotation of internships. She then realized it and said,

"Oooh I thought you were another nursing student, sorry doc."

"Nah, that's okay, I use the same outfit with them hihi."

Then I greeted every nurse and pharmacist there and began to know their names.

My daily routines were texting every specialists about how many patients they treated, every single morning when I came to the hospital. Then I started to write the integrated note for the patients I handled (I usually handled like 3-4 patients in a day). After that, I started writing prescriptions.

It worked quite well, except for the patient-visit part. I began to feel anxious every single time the specialist came. It made me so nervous that I couldn't think clearly and made everything a mess.

An example given, once I forgot about the complete blood count examination, so when the specialist asked me, I got confused and she's mad at me. Even my senior asked me what happened since the specialist asked him to handle me. That was really made me anxious even more.

Last three weeks, in upper floor, isolation or pulmonology. It was just an ordinary day to start, except for the mask I used and the more I prepared myself for infection. I still felt anxious, of course.

One day, the pulmonology specialist asked me where I came from, and I answered. Then he felt kinda surprised because I got this really quite voice, and people from my region usually have this big voice. He kept joking around about how weak and how quite I am. He also said,

"You need to gain at least 20 pounds here. God, you're so skinny."

I could only laughed, as per usual. Then he asked again what specialty I'd like to take, and I said medical rehabilitation. He said,

"Then you have to be strong enough. What if you handle a big and heavy patient? You're so little. Eat more, gain some weight, and practice."

I could only laughed, again. He's s a funny guy, and also smart, so I kinda felt anxious as well every time he came by. Well actually, I felt anxious for everyone.

Another thing to tell, I once came in the morning, then must faced a patient with oxygen desaturation. Not long after I came, one of the family came and said the patient did not breathe anymore. The nurses rushed there to check, and yep, he's not breathing anymore. I went there to checked and the pupils were totally mydriasis. We asked for the family to do electrocardiography to kindly check to make sure, but the family refused. That was quite a chaos morning without a senior there to help me, but quite an experience.

That's my story about first 6 weeks of hospital internship rotation.
